Bathroom Extractor Fan

Jul 7th, 2010 by MCSmith

When you plan on wiring a bathroom extractor fan, there are a few tips that can be incredibly helpful to you. A bathroom extractor fan is designed and used for extracting humidity, moisture, and heat from within the bathroom. This keeps moisture from accumulating behind the walls of the bathroom, and helps to prevent mold and other forms of bacteria to form. Mold and bacteria can be very harmful to not only the flooring and stud walls of the bathroom, but also to people using the bathroom as well.

A strong box should be constructed to house the fan. The main circuit breaker should be switched off before the process of wiring the extractor fan can begin. Also, the main circuit breaker should stay off during the installation process. You will run the risk of shorting out the circuit to the bathroom extractor fan if the main circuit is not switched off. Lastly, before the installation of the extractor fan is completed, be sure to firmly and properly secure the wiring.

A housing box will be needed for the extractor fan. The housing box keeps the fan from slipping out and is necessary for holding the extractor fan in place. You can buy the extractor fan and the assembly for the housing box at the same time. Since it is necessary to make sure the extractor fan stays in place, you might need to widen the installation space in the bathroom to make room for the housing box.

Before you begin the installation, you’ll want to make sure that the main circuit breaker is turned off, before starting wiring the bathroom extractor fan. All of the power in your house is controlled by the main circuit breaker. You will be safe to wire the extractor fan by shutting off the main circuit breaker – this will ensure that all the power is off in your house.

During the wiring process, there’s a chance you could short the circuit if you don’t shut it off properly. Also, never touch the live wires while you’re installing an electrical appliance of any kind. You could easily be shocked and electrocuted by the wires. There is a greater chance of this happening if you are not grounded correctly, or if you are working on a metal ladder, for example, or another metal surface – the metal can act as an electrical conductor.

Before attaching the extractor fan, make sure that the wiring is secure and tucked away into the wire box or the wall. Make sure that the wiring ends are taped with electrical tape and securely capped. This can prevent the wires from sparking, which could start an electrical fire. The electrical appliance that you purchase should come with instructions for securing the loose wire to keep your home safe.

Hopefully these tips will help you wire and install bathroom extractor fans easily, correctly, and most important of all, safely. You can also use these fundamental tips when you are installing ceiling fans and range hoods, as well.
