If you’re living in a place that’s smaller than you’d like (and who isn’t?) and you are trying to store too much stuff to fit (and who isn’t?) then storage is more of an art and a luxury than the mathematical dimensions of your closet may insinuate. You need to get creative and think about how you can add a little bit more storage space here and there, so you can not only keep everything tucked away nicely, but also have a home that’s designed and decorated as well. Here are a couple ways to do this that you may not have thought of.
Have you ever seen vacuum storage bags in action? These things are brilliant. You put your clothing in them and then you vacuum seal them, which flattens the clothes more than you could imagine. If you have a pile of shirts you could reduce their size by as much as 50%! For someone trying to keep a lot of clothes, this is exactly what you’re looking for – and to top it off, you could put these vacuum sealed bags anywhere. They’re small enough you could even squeeze them under the couch, TV stand, or dresser! This is the kind of creativity you’re looking for to make the best use of the space you have.
If that’s tapped out, then consider using decorative storage boxes to simultaneously store things away while also designing the room. My favorite example is an antique storage trunk. When put into the living room, you could make it the centerpiece of the entire room with some supporting paintings or furniture that matches it. Now you have a bold room that will catch anyone’s eye, and at the same time you can stuff the trunk full of whatever you need to hide away. It’s the best of both worlds when you use decorative storage boxes with lids.
Creativity will get you a lot more storage space than you think is possible. These are just a couple possibilities to hopefully get your juices flowing.
